Making a difference
Renishaw is a world leader in engineering and science based technologies employing over 4,000 people globally, some 2,200 of which are located within Gloucestershire. Last July the FTSE 250 listed business reported record turnover of £495 million for its financial year ended June 2015, of which 95% was due to exports.
The company’s products are used by manufacturers globally to produce high quality components for industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, agriculture and consumer electronics. Renishaw is also the UK’s only manufacturer of additive manufacturing machines (also referred to as 3D printing), which ‘print’ parts from metal powder.
Renishaw is also applying its expertise to healthcare applications such as dentistry, neurosurgery, medical diagnostics and craniofacial surgery. In Bristol it is working with Southmead Hospital and Bristol Children’s Hospital on pioneering neurosurgical procedures including the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and brain cancer in children.
Renishaw has won multiple international awards, including 18 Queen’s Awards, the latest of which was awarded for innovation in April 2015 for its RESOLUTE absolute position encoder. The company is also recognised for its manufacturing excellence and in September 2012 its Woodchester assembly site near Stroud in Gloucestershire, was named the UK’s Best Electronics & Electrical Plant.
To continue its success Renishaw is highly committed to developing its own skilled staff and this year is recruiting a record 70 graduates and 45 apprentices, and already has 120 young people within its four apprenticeship schemes. In 2015, Lucy Ackland, who joined the company as an apprentice aged just 16 and went on to achieve a 1st Class Engineering Honours Degree, became a national ambassador for the engineering sector after winning the Women’s Engineering Society Prize for her work to inspire young students to follow STEM-based careers.
With a strong commitment to developing and recognising the contribution of its own talented young employees, Renishaw is therefore very pleased to sponsor the Young Business Person of the Year award which honours people in the county who demonstrate ambition, energy, skill, vision and have achieved tangible business success.
